Pont Notre-Dame is located at one of the oldest historical crossing points on the Seine in Paris.
An ancient structure, Grand Pont, occupied the present bridge's site up until the Norman invasions in the 9th century. A new stone bridge was built in 1853, its middle arches were later replaced with a metal arch.
