Gauguin: Metamorphoses

Paul Gauguin, French, 1848-1903. Mata mua (In Olden Times), 1892, oil on canvas. Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Madrid.

Gauguin: Metamorphoses is the first major monographic exhibition on Paul Gauguin (French, 1848-1903) ever presented at The Museum of Modern Art, and includes paintings, prints, transfer drawings, and sculptures. Though most often known for his modernist painting, at various moments Gauguin also created wood carvings and woodcuts, ceramics, drawings, and lithography. His creative process involved repeating and recombining key motifs from one image to another, allowing them to evolve and metamorphose over time and across mediums. On view through June 8, 11 West 53 Street.
