In their 1858 Greensward Plan, designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux collaborated in the planning and construction of Central Park, weaving architectural features like the mid-park Bethesda Terrace into the landscape. Designed by Vaux, the terrace is the site of the bronze and stone Angel of the Waters fountain created by sculptor Emma Stebbins.
Decorative sandstone carvings by architect Jacob Wrey Mould adorn stairways and posts.
