Just outside the boundaries of the District of Columbia, Arlington National Cemetery (est. 1864) overlooks Washington. The first person buried there was a Confederate prisoner, followed by thousands of Union soldiers. Today, Arlington includes the graves of three hundred thousand war dead, dignitaries and high-ranking government officials.
President Kennedy is buried on a site he admired, a beautiful hillside, beneath a Cape Cod fieldstone slab.
