Established as a repository of decorative art in 1907, the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has evolved into a comprehensive collection. The holdings of 60,000 objects (fifteenth through the twentieth century) include sculpture, woodwork, furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, jewelry, mathematical instruments, tapestries, and textiles. Set against the backdrop of Central Park, the Carroll and Milton Petrie European Sculpture Court, one of a series of the department's gallery spaces, is designed as a classical French garden and presents large outdoor Italian and French sculpture dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.
