The Flatiron Building

Combining elements of French and Italian Renaissance architecture, the Flatiron Building (built in 1902 by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham) is one of New York's oldest skyscrapers. The 22-story, 285-foot building's triangular contour at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway at 23rd Street is one of the enduring symbols of the city. With its dynamic shape, the building resembles a tall, classic column with a capital or the prow of a ship at its six-foot-wide apex, while from broadside, the 190-foot-wide facade, richly patterned and deeply incised, creates a play of light and shadow.
