Central Park's Shakespeare Garden occupies four acres on the hill adjacent to Belvedere Castle, north of the 79th Street transverse. Named for the English poet and playwright, the naturalistic cottage garden created in the '80s by designers Bruce Kelly and David Varnell is based on The Plant-Lore and Garden-Craft of Shakespeare (1884) by Henry Ellacombe. Plants and flowers in the garden are mentioned in his poems and plays.
