Air and Space

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum features historic airplanes and spacecraft--the 1903 Wright Flyer, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia--many hanging from the trusses in the hangar-like exhibition spaces.

The US Air Force/NASA X-15 66670 aircraft (fastest and highest-flying winged aircraft of its time) conducted experiments in space sciences during flights from 1959-1968, collecting data about hypersonic flight relevant to aeronautics and the space shuttle developers.
