Georgetown, founded 1751, still retains its atmosphere of a colonial river port town; originally a part of Maryland before being absorbed into DC in 1791. A historic district, its residential blocks enclose Federal rowhouses, freestanding townhouses and estates, modest with restrained ornament--among the most elegant houses in DC.
