At the west end of the Mall, the Lincoln Memorial counterpoints the east end Capitol. Light enters the space from ceiling panels and entrance onto Daniel Chester French's iconic statue of Lincoln. The monument to the sixteenth President serves as a place for both visitors and civil rights demonstrations.
