The National Gallery of Art's collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs, prints, and decorative arts includes Western art from the Middle Ages to the present. Founded in 1937, its first exhibition opened in May, 1941.
The West Building houses European (13th-early 20th century) and American (18th-early 20th century) art--an extensive range in Dutch masters, French impressionists, American, British, Flemish, Spanish, and German art.
