The Brooklyn Bridge's two granite towers feature twin Neo-Gothic arches, similar to cathedral windows or gateways. Built 1869 to 1883, Brooklyn Bridge was the first steel cable suspension bridge, designed by architect John Roebling as "a great avenue" between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Pedestrians and cyclists cross the East River along an elevated wooden walkway. North tower, view towards Manhattan.

"The completed work, when constructed in accordance with my designs, will not only be the greatest bridge in existence, but will be the greatest engineering work of the continent, and of the age. Its most conspicuous features, the great towers, will serve as landmarks to the adjoining cities, and they will be entitled to be ranked as national monuments." --John Roebling, 1867.
